Wow, life does get in the way some times. I can't believe I haven't updated the ole' blog since June! It's been a tough year for me and my family, so I have had to step back from the blog for a while. But, here I am and boy do I have some portraits to share with you! Tonight I am going to share some of my favorites from Ashlan's vintage session at the Texas Transportation Museum. She was a natural behind the camera and the lighting was beautiful streaming in the cloudy windows of the old Pullman passenger train. Take a look for yourself!

We really got lucky last week when Wanda and I met to take her bridal portraits. This south Texas heat is miserable this time of year, but we were blessed with a cool, breezy, overcast morning. The beautiful bride really turned a lot of heads driving the golf cart around the grounds! I had never driven one before and she drives one all the time where she works, so the logical conclusion was to let her behind the wheel, even in heels and a wedding gown. She handled it with class.

Cherished Family Photo Contest Entries

Thank you to eveyone who entered the Cherished Family Photo Contest. Before I share the entries, I want to share my photo with you and why it means so much to me. I must say it is hard to narrow it down to one photo, and some of you may have intended on entering but felt daunted by the task of chosing just one. The photo I picked was one of my Mammaw, who died when I was a teenager. It was hard excluding photos of my parents, my husband, and especially my kids. I cherish them all. But I picked this photo because I experience a longing in my heart, a precious memory from years past. She meant the world to me. I remember when she became so ill she went to live in a home for the elderly. It broke my mom's heart because we didn't have the means to take care of her in our home. It broke my heart as well, especially when we went to visit her. The place smelled funny and felt oppressive, like death was walking the halls. The photo, I believe, was taken during one of those visits. Here is the photo:

My daughter is deaf and has other medical problems. This photo was taken after we had moved to Texas in a matter of weeks due to her medical condition. Due to the move I was separated from my family for 3 months. This picture is special to me because, after months of separation and stress, I caught a tender moment between my daughter and wife that signified that signified the peace of being a family again. L. I like this photo for many reasons!

I have decided that the one picture that I will send is of my daughter Julie's first haircut. I absolutely LOVE this picture and I melt every time I look at it. We went to the salon and had her hair "cut" more actually a trim and Lisa put her hair in piggy tails for the first time. I love the look of pure joy in her smile....you can see through to her loving joyous heart in this picture. In spite of her slobbery chin and her spotted shirt ... only things a mommy would notice anyway...I keep a copy at my desk at work just to make my day brighter. I hope you enjoy it. J. Benkiel

Photography, Meaning, Life, and a Contest

I just returned from three days of inspiration and learning at Imaging USA, the annual conference for Professional Photographers of America. I expected to hear some great speakers, but quite unexpected was the tears running down my cheek during the seminar presented by celebrated photographer David Williams, http://www.davidanthonywilliams.com/. He presented very little specific instruction on techniques or marketing, but I came away from his presentation with more ideas for my business than any other speaker there. He talked about the importance of what we do as photographers, capturing moments in life that have meaning to our clients. When you visit his page, view the slideshow at the beginning and read his quotes. Pay special attention to the 15th photo in the slideshow, the one of the little girl hugging her father's arm while he looks off into the distance. Why is this photograph so important? It may not be to the casual viewer, but this little girl will carry this image with her for the rest of her life. Her father was recently killed in Afghanistan. Photographs are all she and her mother have left of him. Think about that the next time you avoid getting your photo taken with your kids.

Changes

I'll be implementing some changes in my business over the next couple of months. I will no longer be offering just the CD. I have struggled with this for some time. I feel so strongly about my clients having something they can see and touch, something tangible they can share with those they love. The CD will only be available bundled with a print or album purchase. I'll announce other changes as they are made through out the year.

Winter Portraits in Ohio

I am scheduling 4 winter portrait sessions in Ohio over the holiday break next month. Winter is a fabulous time for outdoor on location portraiture. The lighting is magical and with a little dusting of snow, can produce beautiful portraits that can not be accomplished in the summer. Of course, you don't need snow for a great winter portrait, but it is definitely icing on the cake! Indoor locations are ok too if you are not quite ready to bundle up and head outdoors.

Interested, but not sure what to wear? Layer up with fun hats, tall boots, and pretty scarves for the ladies. Long skirts give a romantic look while a flattering pair of pants tucked into boots lend a more modern flair. A splash of bright color against the subdued winter scenery is nice too. Deck kids out in bright scarves and funky hats as well, and maybe a pair of cute fur lined boots. Scarves are great for men, too. The key is to layer up not only for good looks but for warmth as well.

A winter portrait makes a nice last minute gift for the bride to be, the 2011 high school senior, or mom and dad. Of course, it also is a great way to capture the memory of your own family as they are right now.

Dates available are Dec. 26, 27, and 28, 2010. Appointment times are flexible. Sessions must be booked by no later than December 18, 2010. Gina Davison Photography New Client Custom Portrait Challenge

Bring me a flier from one of the big chain photography studios (J.C. Penney, Sears, Picture People, etc.) from now until September 30 and I will only charge the sitting fee advertised by that studio. Session may be scheduled to take place after September 30, however it must be booked by the September 30 deadline. This deal is for new clients only and only applies to the sitting fee. I got up early before the heat set in today to photograph this young lady and her horse at Unbridled Spirit Stables in Bulverde. She is the daughter of a good friend of mine. When I look at the photos I realize how quickly time has passed since I first met her and her mom. We had some really nice natural lighting while the sun was still lower in the sky. It was a really great morning.

How Custom Portraiture is Like a Trip to the Spa...

Imagine the difference between a shoulder rub from your beloved partner and a relaxing massage from a professional massage therapist in a spa setting. Of course you enjoy the shoulder rub. Your tense shoulders feel more relaxed and you enjoy the attention from your partner. But if you have ever experienced the hands of an expert massage therapist you know first hand the work of a professional. No doubt, the professionalism of this person was determined beyond the quality of the massage, but also by creating the right environment for your experience and providing great customer service. You left feeling happy and relaxed.

Family snapshots are to be treasured as much as that shoulder rub from your spouse. They capture the spontaneous joy of birthdays and adventures of family vacations, and create a visual history of your family through the years. Sometimes, though, you need a professional.

Instead of the full spa experience you could opt for something in between, something equivalent to a chair massage at the mall. Their services are adequate, the portrait quality usually good, and they are able to offer low prices on their portrait packages and sitting fees.

Custom photography is the full spa experience.

Yes, it does cost more, but you are getting a complete package. Like your spa massage, it is a greater time commitment as well, but well worth it. You will likely have between 20-30 proofs to chose from, depending on the length of your session. Your photos will be creatively edited and unique to your family. You will have many options to display your photos in your home and share them with friends and family. Everything from custom albums and gallery wrapped canvas prints to custom storyboards and custom framing. The whole portrait experience will be designed around your family's needs. Custom portrait photographers guide every aspect of your session; planning, getting little one's to cooperate, editing, ordering, and delivering your final product. With all of this individual attention, do you really want to settle for a chair massage at the mall?

Why You Should Get Prints of your Photos

I stumbled upon a great blog article on the Internet a few days ago that talked about the importance of turning those digital files into prints. I really thought I had bookmarked it to come back to later, but it appears I no longer have the link to the article or the name of the author. However, his post really got me thinking. He pointed out that most digital photos never get printed, something like 80% I believe. That includes personal snapshots and professional photos. It has become popular for clients to request digital images in lieu of ordering prints and most photographers are offering them now because clients are requesting them. It may seem like a good idea to purchase the CD. After all, you will have the files to print at your leisure by the printer of your choice. But there are a couple down sides to storing your photos as digital files. One is simply procrastination. I am guilty of this myself. I really intend to get those photos of my kids printed someday.

The biggest downside, according to the article, is technology itself. The author tells a story sometime in the future. The grand kids are digging through old family treasures and wondering where the family photos are. They stumble upon a bunch of shiny round things with holes in the middle. When they ask their mother about them, she tells them all the family photos are stored on those shiny discs, but they can no longer access them. The children are no doubt sad because this part of their family history is lost. The author makes a valid point with his story. Technology changes fast. The floppy disk has become obsolete. Photography itself has been dramatically changed. Only a very few die hards still use film. By the time today's young parents become grandparents, the CD may very well be obsolete, too. Take the time to order prints of your most cherished digital images so they are not lost to technology's changes. Frame them, make an album out of them, pile them into a box, but get them printed! Of course, the grand kids could frame the Cd's. Now that would be quite the family heirloom.

In general, avoid anything too trendy or with bold colors and large patterns. You do not want to draw attention away from the face. Solid earth tones and classic colors like black are ideal. There are exceptions for children. When the mood of the portrait is meant to be a little funky, bright clothing and accessories can add personality to the photograph. Just make sure it is a color your child looks good in and reflects your child’s personality.

When a group is involved, outfits do not have to match, but should coordinate.

Women should avoid open necklines and instead opt for clothing with v shaped necklines. Everyone should avoid sleeveless tops.

Feel free to bring an extra set of clothing to change into. Also bring hair brushes, makeup, combs, etc. for those little touch ups.

Avoid clothing with logos, lettering, or numbers on it as this can be distracting. Sports uniforms are the only exception.

Add fun accessories. A floppy hat, a long scarf, a bright red umbrella, a favorite toy, or your child’s favorite bright green sunglasses are little details that create portraits that are memorable and are unique to your child’s personality. Other possibilities include an instrument, a soccer ball, a skateboard, etc.

Most importantly, choose clothing that is comfortable! You don’t want to be distracted by itchy collars or uncomfortable fabrics. I want your photo session to be fun and relaxing.

Wow, this was a fun backyard session! Such vibrant imagination among these two. Definately not your standard flawless studio portrait, but full of personality and playfulness. Contemporary, casual, fun. I love the wild swinging hair in the last portrait. It captures her personality perfectly.

These photos were taken on a beautiful spring day down along the Riverwalk, just north of Durango Street. Very few people venture past the commercial area of the Riverwalk, but it is a lovely location for portrait sessions.

I photographed this wonderful couple at the Sunken Gardens in Brackenridge Park. They are expecting their first child, a son, June 1st. As good looking as his parents are, I bet he's going to be a hansome little one!

This little boy was a charm to photograph. I followed him around as he played and posed for me. He had no trouble getting in front of a camera! I took the photos for his Godmother. She was very pleased with the results, saying that I captured his personality perfectly. I love the bright colored sand shovels. The colors are reminiscent of Popsicles. Yum!

Great Grandpa's Hat

He was so proud of that hat! It came with a story written in its brim and soaked into its felt. Adorning the hat was a brown stain, the stain of tobacco spit. Apparently, Great Grandpa's best friend missed the spittoon! Oops!
